Summary

James Middle is a public middle school located in Fort Worth, Texas, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 771 students. The school is part of the Fort Worth Independent School District, which is ranked 733 out of 961 districts in Texas and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. Unfortunately, James Middle has consistently ranked in the bottom 10% of Texas middle schools over the past several years, with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

The data shows that James Middle significantly underperforms compared to the Fort Worth ISD and Texas state averages across all STAAR test subjects and grade levels. For example, in 2024-2025, only 16.95% of 6th graders at James Middle were proficient or better in STAAR Reading, compared to 38.24% for Fort Worth ISD and 54.21% for Texas. Additionally, James Middle has had high dropout rates in recent years, ranging from 1.9% to 4.1%, which are higher than the district and state averages. The school also has a very high percentage of economically disadvantaged students, with 94.81% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in 2023-2024, significantly higher than the nearby schools like Riverside Middle, Jean McClung Middle, and Meadowbrook Middle.

While the higher per-student spending at James Middle compared to the district average is noteworthy, the school's performance still lags behind, suggesting that the issues may be more systemic in nature, such as teacher quality or school leadership. It is worth noting that many of the nearby schools still struggle to meet state and district averages, indicating that the challenges faced by James Middle are not unique to the school but may be reflective of broader challenges within the Fort Worth Independent School District as a whole. Addressing the root causes of these issues will be crucial for improving the educational outcomes of the students at James Middle.

Open Quote William James is out of control. Maybe they USED to be a good school, but that is long gone. Students are skipping and hanging outside all day. When I entered the building I had to pass by about 10 kids in a group who were leaving the campus in the middle of the day. In addition, the ladies restroom was disgusting. Please send your child to a better school. Close Quote
