Summary

Evans Ses is an elementary school in Corpus Christi, Texas, serving 220 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Corpus Christi Independent School District, which is ranked 623 out of 968 districts in Texas and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Evans Ses has a significantly higher percentage of Hispanic students (89.55%) compared to the surrounding schools, which range from 70.29% to 95.58% Hispanic students. The school consistently ranks in the bottom quartile of Texas elementary schools, with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger for the past several years. Its STAAR test scores are significantly lower than the district and state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. Additionally, over 95% of Evans Ses students receive free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population. Despite the high spending per student ($14,070 in 2020-2021), the school is still underperforming compared to its peers, which range from $9,581 to $14,534 per student.

The analysis of Evans Ses reveals a school that is struggling to provide quality educational opportunities for its students, despite significant funding and resources. Nearby schools, such as Houston Elementary, Wynn Seale Metropolitan School Of Design, and Zavala Elementary, while also serving predominantly Hispanic and economically disadvantaged student populations, generally outperform Evans Ses on academic measures. Addressing the persistent academic challenges and disparities at Evans Ses will likely require a multifaceted approach that goes beyond simply increasing spending and considers factors such as effective instructional practices, targeted interventions, and equitable resource allocation.

Open Quote I have taught at Evans for 5 years! This is the best school to work for! The students and other staff members have become family. I love coming to work Monday-Fridays just as much as I love the weekends! We are a smaller campus which is great because it gives the us the opportunity for more one-on-one instruction and the ability to really grow and strengthen our relationships with our students. Open Quote As someone who is not from Corpus Christi and started student teaching here at George Evans Elementary, I have always felt welcomed as part of the Evans family. I started student teaching in Fall of 2020 in the midst of covid and virtual learning. The effort that these teachers give to their students is truly amazing. My mentor teacher Mrs. Guerrero never gave up on pushing students to success. It is now Spring of 2021 and I am currently working at this school as both a Tutor and Substitute and it has by far been my favorite school that I have had the pleasure to work with. From the students to the staff, we really are a family at Evans! Close Quote
