Summary

Andrews Elementary is a public elementary school in Austin, Texas, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 341 students. Despite receiving relatively high per-student funding, the school has consistently ranked in the bottom 10% of Texas elementary schools over the past several years, with a 0 or 1 star rating from SchoolDigger, indicating it is one of the lowest-performing schools in the state.

Andrews Elementary significantly underperforms the district and state averages on STAAR assessments across all grade levels and subjects, particularly in mathematics and science. For example, in 2024-2025, only 9.76% of 3rd graders achieved proficiency in math, compared to district and state averages around 45%. The school also struggles with a high percentage of economically disadvantaged students (94.43%) and English Language Learners. Interestingly, nearby schools like Harris Elementary and Blanton Elementary, which serve similar student populations, generally outperform Andrews Elementary on academic measures.

Andrews Elementary's persistent low performance across multiple student subgroups and its lack of improvement over time indicate that more substantial changes may be necessary to address the underlying issues and provide a high-quality education for the students. The school's struggles are particularly concerning for its Asian and gifted and talented student subgroups, which rank in the bottom 5% and bottom 25% of Texas elementary schools, respectively. Despite the school's high per-student funding and relatively low student-teacher ratio, these resources do not seem to be translating into improved academic outcomes for the students of Andrews Elementary.

Open Quote My daughter attended Andrews for one year before we moved to a different school district. We were happy with my daughter's teacher. She had decades of teaching experience and was passionate about her job. I was also very pleased with the school's administrators. I felt like the principal really valued my opinion as a parent.

We were disappointed in communication and parent involvement. A lot of times we didn't find out about school events until the day before, which was a little frustrating. Only 2-3 parents attended PTA meetings, which I found surprising and concerning, since there is often a direct correlation between parent involvement and student achievement.

The student body is overwhelmingly low income, with a high percentage of English language learners. This affects test scores. However, I appreciate that the principal places an emphasis on fostering bilingualism for the students who are native Spanish speakers. In the long run, this is probably in the best interest of the students--even if it means lower test scores in the short term. Close Quote
