Summary

Cedars International Academy is a public charter elementary and middle school serving 349 students in grades PK-8 in Austin, Texas. The school is part of the Cedars International Academy District, which is ranked 545 out of 961 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Cedars International Academy has consistently underperformed compared to the state average on STAAR tests across all grade levels and subjects. For example, in 2024-2025, only 25% of 3rd graders were proficient in reading, compared to the state average of 52.02%. The school also struggles to support certain student subgroups, with rankings for male, Hispanic, and special education students in the bottom 25% of Texas elementary schools. In contrast, the school performs better for African American students, ranking in the top 15% of Texas elementary schools in 2017-2018 and 2018-2019. Cedars International Academy has very high rates of students qualifying for free/reduced lunch, ranging from 80-86% over the past few years, significantly higher than nearby Austin Independent School District schools.

Compared to nearby district schools like Guerrero Thompson and Barrington Elementary, which serve similar high-poverty student populations, Cedars International Academy appears to be underperforming. The charter school's lower spending per student, around $10,000 compared to $13,095 at Pickle Elementary and $13,512 at Wooten Elementary, may contribute to challenges in attracting and retaining high-quality teachers and providing sufficient resources to support student learning.

Open Quote Cedars is a diamond in the rough! My child is doing so well there.
Things we love about Cedars: small class sizes, strong social emotional learning, hands on learning, all children regardless of economic status receive free breakfast and lunch, top-notch art, music, and Spanish classes, a vegetable garden, fruit trees, and a butterfly garden.
The kindergarten program is particularly amazing. The children travel around the world learning geography in context. All students are in school houses (like in Harry Potter). It helps all students feels connected. Cedars feels like a family where everyone is someone. It’s like a private school, but free. 5 stars from our family. Close Quote
