Open Quote I was reviewing with my child a form from the school on classroom expectations for new 6th graders. I had him read it out loud so I knew that he understood what the expectations are for this new school year. At the end of the form the child was supposed to print his/her name and sign it. My child COULD NOT SIGN HIS OWN NAME. I asked him why he printed and did not sign and he said that he did not know how to write in cursive, therefore, he could not sign his name. Talk about an eye opener. I had heard about the decision to do away with cursive -- however, just thinking that this child will one day be an adult called upon to sign bank documents, income tax forms, credit card receipts, rental applications, etc., etc., etc.

As of today, I will begin teaching a 6th grader how to write in cursive. How very, very sad that the schools today do not see the need to teach something as basic as how to sign your name. The school ranking within the State is so poor as to be an embarrassment. I've changed his school, but how many other BASIC EDUCATION 101 THINGS HAS HE NOT BEEN TAUGHT? Shame on you principals, teachers, administrators, supervisors, etc. for allowing our Tennessee children to be ranked this low among their peers in other states. Shame on me for not noticing sooner that my child could not even sign his name. Close Quote

Open Quote There are some real gems at this school as far as teachers go, but they can only do so much for the overall experience in this school. Kids are poorly behaved, foul-mouthed and I constantly have to coach my son to not fall prey to the ones who are dishonest. He has already been stolen from twice. There were a lot of lofty statements made about the program and how issues are handled, but I have yet to see anything enforced if I don't go down to the school and press the issue. My kid is miserable... we're looking for some alternatives now but Goodlettsville has no other options. That makes ME miserable!

I am a very patient person but this is one of those 'if I had known then what I know now' situations. It is making me crazy to see how it is destroying my child! His teacher is terrific and all but when you have a principal who seems to think that discipline can be replaced by a forced handshake and 'apology' there isn't much hope for order, let alone education...
