Roseway Heights School is a public middle school in Portland, Oregon, serving 549 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Portland School District 1J, which is ranked 13th out of 140 districts in the state.

Despite being part of a highly-ranked district, Roseway Heights School has consistently underperformed compared to the district and state averages in standardized test scores for English Language Arts and Mathematics. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, the school's proficiency rates were significantly lower than the district's in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. The school also has high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 34.3% to 46.0% over the past few years, which is much higher than the state average. Additionally, the school's performance varies greatly across different student subgroups, with Asian and African American students ranking in the bottom 30% of Oregon middle schools, while White and Special Education students perform better.

When compared to nearby schools within the same district, such as Beaumont Middle School and Mt. Tabor Middle School, Roseway Heights School underperforms significantly, with those schools consistently ranking in the top 25% of Oregon middle schools and having much higher proficiency rates. Despite having a relatively low student-teacher ratio and high spending per student, Roseway Heights School's performance has been inconsistent over the years, suggesting the need for the school to re-evaluate its instructional practices and support systems to better serve its diverse student population.

Open Quote When this was a K-8 elementary school it had teacher and staff morale and an energized parent community. PPS destroyed it when they converted it to a middle school (against the will of the parents). Took my son out of the school as it became a cesspool of fighting and unmotivated and unresponsive teachers and staff. PPS never did force any of the wealthier K-8 schools to break into elementary and middle schools - funny how that works. Shame on PPS for sticking it to the middle and working class parents and children yet again. Close Quote
