Summary

Benjamin Franklin is an elementary school in Cleveland, Ohio, serving 389 students in grades PK-8. It is part of the Cleveland Municipal school district, which is ranked 675 out of 828 districts in Ohio and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. Unfortunately, Benjamin Franklin has consistently ranked in the bottom 20% of Ohio elementary schools over the past 10 years, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

The school faces significant challenges, including extremely high chronic absenteeism rates ranging from 51.5% to 56.1% over the past few years, compared to the Cleveland Municipal district average of around 27% and the state average of around 15%. Additionally, Benjamin Franklin students perform poorly on state assessments, with only 20.8% of 3rd graders proficient in math in 2024-2025, compared to 35% for the district and 64.4% for the state. The school also struggles to serve its diverse student population effectively, ranking in the bottom 25% of Ohio elementary schools for female, male, white, and special education student performance.

Interestingly, the nearby schools in the Cleveland Municipal district, such as William Rainey Harper and Charles A Mooney, perform similarly to Benjamin Franklin, with low test scores and high chronic absenteeism. However, the Parma City schools and the charter schools in the area, like Global Village Academy and Horizon Science Academy-Denison, significantly outperform Benjamin Franklin on most metrics.

Went here for middle school, approaching close to a decade now since I've last had to step foot into the building. For me personally, I went to Benjamin Franklin from K-8 grade, and I definitely experienced the highs and lows Benji had to offer throughout the years - I want to put emphasis on the 'lows' however.. Not to say I haven't made long lasting friendships, learned from very passionate and thoughtful teachers, and even made me into the person I am today - I'm forever thankful that this is the case.

However, there were some notable things that even looking back, makes me look through a lens of negativity. There were some pretty crazy things I saw in that school as a kid. Without going into too much detail, a couple lighter examples I remember are teachers crying in class due to the students' behavior (multiple teachers, multiple times, at different grades, and more frequently than what you would consider 'normal'), and the deteriorating walls/rundown interiors including bits of ceiling that would fall on students (thankfully, since I left the building has undergone remodeling).

I do wonder sometimes about the teachers I had and where they are at now. Looking back, I hope they haven't stopped teaching as the majority of the teachers there enjoyed, or at the very least gave off the impression of enjoying the act of teaching in front of us as kids. I thought they did a great job for the most part. Unfortunately, I do not have any year books and my memory is a little fuzzy so I can't quite remember their names fully, but Mrs. Evans if you're reading this you were awesome!

Hopefully, Benjamin Franklin is no longer experiencing those negative qualities I described above (remember, those are the 'lighter examples'... some crazy things I saw). But from my own personal experience, this is how I would answer the question of "how would you rate your middle school?". Close Quote
