Summary

Our World Neighborhood Charter School is a high-performing public charter school serving 707 students in grades K-8 in Astoria, New York. The school consistently outperforms state and local district averages on standardized tests, with 80.65% of 8th graders proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to the state average of 52.38%. In math, 73.91% of 7th graders were proficient or better, compared to the state average of 56.47%.

The school's exceptional performance extends to traditionally underserved student populations as well. When compared to nearby public schools in the Our World Neighborhood Charter School District, such as Ps 112 Dutch Kills, which has significantly lower academic performance, Our World Neighborhood Charter School stands out as a high-achieving institution.

The school's strong academic outcomes are likely supported by its high spending per student ($18,795 in 2023-2024) and low student-teacher ratio (12:1 in 2023-2024), which are significantly better than nearby public schools. This suggests the school is investing heavily in its educational program and staffing to support student success. Overall, Our World Neighborhood Charter School is a standout institution in the local educational landscape, consistently delivering exceptional academic performance for all students.

Open Quote We have been at this school for a year and have been very happy with it so far. If there is any complaint, it is that there is a LOT of homework, especially for the younger children. But this is not so much a complaint about the school as a sign of the times. What makes OWNCS remarkable in our view, aside from its incredible diversity, is that it takes kids from varying starting positions, targets their needs, and does really well in raising everybody up. Kids who excel are challenged, and kids who need extra help are provided it. The homework, along with long school days and a long school year, are all part of a tactical game plan meant to encourage this success. Young children are doing algebra and reading on their own, well in advance of what we as parents can remember accomplishing several grades later in our day.

The school feels like a real community, its greatest assets its terrific teachers and strong curriculum, supplemented by actual extracurriculars. We wish OWNCS would differentiate itself from other charter schools a bit more, since its model is really very different from the big chains. This is a community based and driven school, and in our view fulfills the promise of what charters can and are meant to do. It provides excellent education (we think) without taking away anything from local "regular" public schools. It engages the neighborhood, and encourages character and citizenship. It is a complement to, not a competitor with, standard public education, a variant of the NYC G&T model.

We think there is a real story to be written about this school. In our opinion, though not without areas for improvement, it is one of the very best in the whole city. Close Quote
