Summary

Whitney E. Houston Academy is an elementary school located in East Orange, New Jersey, serving grades PK-8 with a total enrollment of 327 students. The school is part of the East Orange School District, which is ranked 509 out of 609 districts in New Jersey and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

The school has consistently ranked in the bottom 25% of New Jersey elementary schools over the past 10 years, with proficiency rates in NJSLA English Language Arts and Mathematics below the state and district averages across all grade levels. The school's performance is particularly low in Mathematics, with proficiency rates ranging from 6.1% to 41.5% across grade levels, significantly below the state and district averages. Additionally, the school has experienced high rates of chronic absenteeism, ranging from 14.9% to 32.0% over the past few years, significantly above the state average.

However, the school's unique strengths and the broader context of the surrounding school districts suggest that there may be opportunities for targeted interventions and collaborative efforts to drive meaningful improvements. For example, female students and African American students at the school perform better than their peers, ranking in the top 60% and top 50% of New Jersey elementary schools, respectively. Additionally, students from low socioeconomic backgrounds at the school perform better than the overall student population, ranking in the top 50% of New Jersey elementary schools for this subgroup. Nearby schools, such as Watsessing Elementary School and Cleveland Street Elementary School, are also struggling with low academic performance and high rates of poverty and chronic absenteeism, suggesting that the challenges facing the East Orange and surrounding school districts may be systemic and require a comprehensive, collaborative approach to address.

Open Quote My Son attends this school. Great Preforming Arts Section. Also has a great Dance Teacher Named Chrystal Newbey-Reynolds. She encourages them to strive for nothing but the best. Would Recommend this school for Performing Art's Students. Then Move on to the High School that was just built three months ago. Very Large Close Quote
