Walnut Hill Elementary School

Public Grades PK, KG-6
Summary

Walnut Hill Elementary School is a public elementary school in Omaha, Nebraska, serving around 400 students in grades PK-6. Despite being part of the Omaha Public Schools district, which is ranked 177 out of 182 districts in the state, Walnut Hill Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom 10-20% of Nebraska elementary schools over the past decade, with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger for most years.

Walnut Hill Elementary faces significant challenges, including extremely high chronic absenteeism rates, well below average academic performance in both English Language Arts and Mathematics, and stark disparities in subgroup performance compared to their statewide peers. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 25-39% of Walnut Hill students were proficient in ELA, compared to 58-59% statewide. Despite spending significantly more per student ($17,163 in 2022-2023) than the state average, the school's academic outcomes remain far below state and district levels.

While nearby schools like Fontenelle Elementary, Jackson Elementary, and Franklin Elementary also struggle with low performance as part of the Omaha Public Schools district, they generally outperform Walnut Hill Elementary on key metrics like test scores and chronic absenteeism. This suggests that there may be opportunities to learn from the practices and strategies of these relatively higher-performing schools to help address the systemic challenges facing Walnut Hill Elementary.

Open Quote This is a very terrible School students do not learn anything my children for example have been profiled as behavior problems but no help has been administered to them please. If you thinking about enrolling your children especially if they're colored or African American do not and I repeat do not enroll him into the school even if it's more costly go elsewhere because this school is exactly an example of school to jail pipeline Close Quote
