Kennedy Elementary School

Public Grades PK, KG-5
Summary

Kennedy Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-5 in Omaha, Nebraska, with an enrollment of 234 students. The school is part of the Omaha Public Schools district, which is ranked 177 out of 182 districts in the state and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite spending significantly more per student ($22,221 in 2022-2023) compared to the state average, Kennedy Elementary has consistently ranked among the lowest-performing elementary schools in Nebraska over the past decade, with a ranking between 384-479 out of around 450-480 schools. The school struggles with extremely high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 21.1% to 40.5% in recent years, and its students perform well below their peers statewide and within the Omaha Public Schools district on standardized tests. For example, in 2023-2024, only 30% of 3rd graders were proficient in ELA compared to 58.91% statewide, and only 30% of 5th graders were proficient in Math compared to 61.1% statewide.

While other nearby schools in the Omaha Public Schools district also struggle with low performance, Gifford Park Elementary, which is 1.29 miles away, outperforms Kennedy Elementary across multiple academic measures. The persistent low ranking and inability to translate higher funding into improved outcomes at Kennedy Elementary suggest the need for a comprehensive review and implementation of targeted interventions to address the root causes of the school's challenges.

Open Quote I have freinds who have taught at this school and they arent happy about the direction that it is going. They constantly talk about how rude the students. They cant teach because the kids dont want to learn. The parents are rude and ignorant it just a vicious cycle. Not to mention that the past administrator, Phyllis Brooks was worthless and also scared and afraid of the parent. The kids run the school and no teaching is done. Now with this new 75 north project there are going ot be new staff introduced to the mix...the school will be out of control before we know it. My child used to attend the school and I pulled her out because it was just becoming too much and there was no learning or teaching going on. Close Quote
