Albemarle Middle consistently underperforms compared to the Stanly County Schools district and the state of North Carolina in standardized test scores across all grade levels and subjects. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, Albemarle Middle's proficiency rates in Math and Reading were significantly lower than the district and state averages. The school has a very high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 99.21% to 99.27% over the past three school years, indicating a high concentration of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds. Albemarle Middle has consistently ranked in the bottom quartile of middle schools in North Carolina, with its ranking ranging from 715 out of 773 schools in 2024-2025 to 454 out of 694 schools in 2016-2017.

When comparing Albemarle Middle to other middle schools in the Stanly County Schools district, such as West Stanly Middle and South Stanly Middle, the academic performance gap is quite significant. These nearby schools consistently outperform Albemarle Middle on standardized tests, with proficiency rates that are 20-40 percentage points higher in some cases. Despite Albemarle Middle's higher per-student spending of $10,875 in the 2018-2019 school year compared to the nearby schools, the school's underperformance suggests that funding and resources may not be the primary driver of the school's challenges.

Open Quote The most horrible school my kid has ever went to. Racism, fights, bullying and staff is rude. Kids are not the priority here, I'm not sure what is. This was in 2019-2020.
Hopefully things are better. The school board needs to do something for this school and it's students. Close Quote
