Summary

Bayou View Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Gulfport, Mississippi, serving 687 students in grades K-5. The school is part of the Gulfport School District, which is ranked 39 out of 130 districts in the state and rated 4 stars out of 5 by SchoolDigger.

Bayou View Elementary School has consistently been one of the top-performing elementary schools in Mississippi, ranking 1st or 2nd out of over 380 elementary schools in the state for the past several years. The school has maintained a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger, indicating exceptional academic performance. In the 2024-2025 school year, Bayou View's proficiency rates in English Language Arts (ELA) ranged from 87.3% to 96.2%, significantly higher than the Gulfport School District (58% to 69.3%) and the state of Mississippi (49.4% to 55.9%). In Mathematics, Bayou View's proficiency rates ranged from 81.7% to 89.1%, again outperforming the district (48.4% to 59%) and the state (48.3% to 56.6%).

However, Bayou View Elementary School has experienced a concerning increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 7.2% in 2020-2021 to 23.9% in 2022-2023. This trend is worrying, as high chronic absenteeism can negatively impact student learning and academic achievement. Additionally, the school has an exceptionally high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 99.21% to 100% over the past few years, indicating that the school serves a predominantly economically disadvantaged student population. Despite these challenges, Bayou View Elementary maintains a relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 14.7 to 19.1 students per teacher, which can be beneficial for student learning and allow for more individualized attention.

Open Quote Bayou View Elementary is the best elementary school for your child. I am currently a teacher at this school. However, I can also speak as a parent as all three of my children have attended Bayou View Elementary as well as two of my grandchildren. The parent participation is amazing, the school is a Blue Ribbon School, and the Teachers love what they do and love their students. When you have that combination you just can't go wrong. Open Quote Cafeteria staff are easy to get along with and enjoy their jobs. This proves to be delightful, especially when the principal and assistant principal, teachers and staff really enjoy our food. The children also enjoy calling us "good cookers." Close Quote

Open Quote As an employee of Gulfport School District in the Finance Department, I appreciate the small role I am allowed to play in supporting this school. It is still an outstanding neighborhood school with parents and staff that make every decision based on what is best for students. The Finance Department strives to make sure the all taxpayer resources are spent as efficiently as possible. Close Quote

Open Quote The Gulfport schools have been blazing the trail for the state of MS by being the only school district in the state to fully implement the Common Core State Standards on behalf of the state department of ed. The teachers have received statewide and local notoriety for their efforts. Two members of the instructional department were selected to serve on the state's national PARCC team. Our district is progressive; for example, all 9th-10th grade students have been provided en e-reader to lighten the load of the book bags. Other technological advances are being made available to our teachers, students, and principals. All core classes have interactive whiteboards. We have redesigned our high school to give students career-based opportunities and early college experience during their junior and senior years. The arts are important to developing a well-rounded student. Our music programs (band, choir, and strings) are among the best in the country and world! How do I know? We continue to win sweepstakes awards each year and have been invited to Disney and Germany to showcase our talents! Athletics? We are the home of state champions in soccer, basketball, and weight lifting. Our Marine ROTC teaches leadership and continues to win state and regional competitions as well. We hold ourselves and our students to high levels of excellence. Gulfport is a great education destination!

SN: Those of us who work for the district may bring our children with us if we live out of district. I'm proud to say, we chose GSD. Best decision we could have made. My children's feeder pattern: West-Gulfport Central Middle-Gulfport High led my sons to honors programs and academic scholarships. This school is no exception! High standards coupled with hard work leads to a successful child. Close Quote

Open Quote In 2011, the Mississippi Department of Education selected the Gulfport School District as one of three school districts to participate in a pilot program called Excellence for All. As part of this program, selected school districts were given the opportunity to develop innovative programs for their students that would prepare them to compete on a national and global setting in the core subjects as well as improve students' career and college readiness. Due to a major shift from Mississippi Curriculum Standards to Common Core State Standards, the data on this site does not reflect this shift. Please see the Gulfport School District's website to see actual testing information for the Gulfport School District. (You may also sign up to follow us on Twitter.)

A highly functional school district, the District's selection as a pilot program represents the progressive and passionate commitment to be internationally competitive as the community and district work to meet the mission of the Gulfport School District.

The mission of the Gulfport School District is to inspire each student to become a problem solver, lifelong learner, and productive member of society. Close Quote
