In 2006, the Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) expanded dramatically. “Grade-level testing” in grades 3-8 became mandatory in 2006 under federal law (No Child Left Behind). As a result, MAP tests in communication arts and mathematics were given at seven grade levels, compared with just three grades in past years. In addition, the MAP program was revised to include four achievement levels, instead of five. The four levels (Below Basic, Basic, Proficient and Advanced) were instituted as a result of state law and in order to align with the categories used in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP).
