Summary

Andrew Jackson Academy is an elementary school in Forestville, MD that serves grades PK-8 and is part of the Prince George's County Public Schools district. With 454 students, the school has consistently ranked in the bottom 10-15% of Maryland elementary schools over the past decade, earning a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Andrew Jackson Academy faces significant challenges, including very high chronic absenteeism rates, extremely low test scores across all subjects and grade levels, and a high percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, only 4.2% of students were proficient or better in MCAP Mathematics, compared to 13.1% for the district and 26.5% for the state. Despite increased spending per student, from $16,758 in 2020-2021 to $24,626 in 2023-2024, the school has not shown any meaningful improvement in its academic outcomes.

When compared to nearby schools in the same district, Andrew Jackson Academy stands out as an outlier in terms of academic performance. For instance, Longfields Elementary, a magnet school just 1.52 miles away, has significantly higher test scores across all subjects and grade levels. The school's persistent low performance and lack of improvement over time, despite increased funding, indicate the need for a comprehensive review and implementation of more effective educational strategies to support student success.

Open Quote I wish I could give this school zero stars. Its like pulling teeth to get information from the school. The staff is curt and unpleasant. The only was I have been able to get the school to communicate with me is through public media like twitter and tagging the school system in the post. The parents that show up get lectured about there not being parent involvement. However, I have told them to let me know how I can help and given my email multiple times. I've have ZERO response from the school. The kids curse in the office in front of the staff. There's no respect for the kids or the adults. There have been fights between parents and kids. Its November and my kid is still waiting to get assigned a locker... I could go on and on but its not worth my time... Close Quote

Open Quote THIS SCHOOL DESERVES NO STARS!!!!

My child is a 3rd grader at Andrew Jackson and it has been the absolute worse year of her life. This was our first year here because we moved from Baltimore County. They lost my child on the first day of school. Yes, on the first day. The school is dirty. My daughter always tells me how nasty the bathrooms are and the huge roaches that they have. There are no activities for children in lesser grades after school. No sports no arts/music program. They tailor these things to the older grades.

This school has horrible communication. We (my husband and I) often receive information late, are not alerted about lockdowns and not alerted if someone is in danger. I missed my child's honor roll ceremony because they decided to change the time the day of. I took time off from my work to be in attendance, which was a waste of my time and money. Also they cancelled the Christmas concert and my daughter was to perform and was looking forward to. An outfit was purchased and again wasted money but they do these things all the time.
Worst of all is the bullying! She has been bullied from day one at this school. She has a few friends but she has a lot of kids that give her a hard time. Recently she has been hit by two different boys in the same week. And we had an indecent exposure incident that was handled severely wrong by the school and the school board. They made her switch homeroom classes which made her the new "target" and the students constantly pick with her and stress her out. I am surprised that she maintained her honor roll status with all the stress she goes through every day. The children use profanity (cursing at her), talk about sex and dance provocatively....these are 8 and 9 year olds. If we could have taken her out a month ago, believe me we would have!
My child used to love school now she dreads going all because of Andrew Jackson Academy. Some of her teachers are mean (not stern but mean) and don't handle situations correctly. They say things they shouldn't say. The teachers don’t teach they talk AT the children. She learns more at home with me and her father than she learns at school.
The administration doesn't handle serious situations correctly because it shouldn’t take 3 days to contact us when something major happens to our daughter. We received a letter a week later after prior-said incident from the principal. Not once did the main principal pick up the phone or ask for a conference. I talked to the 3rd grade principal, but when something as serious as indecent exposure happens to your child, there is no excuse. My daughter feels like the school doesn’t care about her or the kids and I agree.
Needless to say she will not be returning to this school. And I will tell ever single solitary person that I know that Andrew Jackson Academy is the worst school ever. I can’t say anything positive about this school. They ought to be ashamed of how they run this school. They are an absolute disgrace to PGPS.

Thank you for your time Close Quote
