As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Awful environment for young kids! Abhorrent behaviors: even the youngest kids there are cursing and physically hurting each other. The teachers are constantly trying to manage the behaviors and have little time to teach. Many of the parents are defensive about their child's misbehavior. The principal is not supportive of her teachers, but the AP, Mr. Clarke, is fantastic with kids and staff. The teachers work hard, but they're fighting a losing battle against students who are disrespectful, aggressive, and so very far behind academically.

There is a huge divide between the regular classrooms and the immersion program. The immersion families are the only ones involved, have money, and in the PTA, the rest of the school families want nothing to do with it, have no money, and go nowhere near the PTA. It's ridiculous that the school lost Title 1 funding because of the money the immersion families have, and now the school can't get the extra resources they really need. Close Quote

Open Quote In July 2014, MCPS appointed a new principal to Burnt Mills Elementary. She has changed the entire climate of the school in just a few months. Kids are happy; parents are happy; teachers are happy. I'm eager to see what the next few years will bring under new leadership! Close Quote

Open Quote We were very skeptical about Burnt Mills but have found the school to be great. The teachers, especially Ms Quimby (reading) are wonderful. The class size is small and the kids get lots of attention. The before and after care programs with Ms Amy are terrific too. We are very happy with the classes and the curriculum. Much is expected of the kids and the teachers work hard to deliver. So far we are pleased. Close Quote

Open Quote BMES continues to meet and exceed annual MSA scores in both reading and math for a straight 6 years in a row. The staff of approximately 65, are committed to each child's success. This is one large task; with a student body that speaks over 80 various languages in their home.

Yes, the school could use a "physical makeover", so could many schools that are over 35 years old. Parents need to be more involved by continuing to promote good study habits and helping with homework. The teachers cannot do it alone. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
