As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Watkins Mill offers wonderful opportunities for students and their families. There are great activities that go on there- they have International Night, a Talent Show and monthly parent meetings. All of the students in the school receive free breakfast and lunch so there is a great deal of poverty. Close Quote

Open Quote This school is exceeds my lowest expectations. Teachers have trouble managing behavior of kindergarten and first grade kids. There is a socioecOnomic agenda that attempts to achieve equality in part by denying special Educational Services to students with any socioeconomic advantages. The individual Child is lost in this. The principal structures the school rules according to her will even when they directly contradict mcps rules. For example parents were not permitted in classrooms even though mcps mandates parent entry at will.
That may have changed after complaints but the willful self coronation of the principal as the monarch of the school that underlies it is still there. The principal has an explosive temper and occasionally walks around the school barefoot. Principal discourages parental involvement. There are gangs in fifth grade in this school. Many kids who attend Watkins mill need disciplinary structure and an environment that fosters excellence but this school Fails to achieve this as effectively as other mcps elementary schools with similar socioeconomic profiles. The ranking of this school in the bottom 10% of all Maryland public elementary schools is justified and tragic given mcps resources. The principal and senior administration need to be replaced to bring to this school a culture of academic excellence and bring out the potential of the young children who attend this school. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
