Summary

Annapolis High is a public magnet high school located in Annapolis, Maryland, serving grades 9-12 with a total enrollment of 2,089 students. It is part of the Anne Arundel County Public Schools district, which is ranked 13th out of 25 districts in Maryland and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite its magnet school status, Annapolis High has consistently underperformed compared to the Anne Arundel County and Maryland state averages on standardized tests. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, only 3.8% of Annapolis High students were proficient or better in MCAP Mathematics, compared to 28.8% in the district and 26.5% statewide. The school's proficiency rates in MCAP English Language Arts and Algebra I are also significantly lower than the district and state averages. Additionally, Annapolis High has had a higher dropout rate, ranging from 4.0% to 10.1% in recent years, and has struggled with high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 22.1% to 40.1%.

Interestingly, Broadneck High and Severna Park High, two nearby high schools, consistently outperform Annapolis High on standardized tests and have higher graduation rates. This suggests that the magnet school status of Annapolis High does not necessarily translate into higher academic achievement compared to other high-performing schools in the area. The relatively high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch at Annapolis High, ranging from 56.32% to 59.76% in recent years, may also be a contributing factor to the school's lower academic performance.

Open Quote This school is unfairly rated. Annapolis High is Economically and racially diverse and as such may not "rate" as well according to the statistics used for the ratings on this site. Annapolis High has the IB -International Baccalaureate Program and has a Performing and Visual Arts Magnet as well as AP program. The administration is excellent and the school has so many dedicated and wonderful teachers. Don't take arbitrary ratings as the end all be all. Talk to parents, teachers and students and check out the website or Facebook page to get a better feel. My daughter is a senior at AHS and loves it, she has a diverse group of friends and they are all getting excited about going on to college so far this year we have kids going to top schools in the nation.
