Open Quote A wonderful community with great teachers. They had a phenomenal Principal who really supported his staff and brought out the best in them. He was very approachable and knew all the kids names. Just the type of experience you want for your kid for elementary school. The school has great test scores but what is more valued in the community is that the value of recess is appreciated and growing the whole child is important. . Close Quote

Open Quote Mason Rice and its principal have a very good reputation in Newton, and for the typically developing child it is a good school. But if you have a child that needs more social or academic support look elsewhere. The hidden underbelly of this school is that they are slow to diagnose learning differences and many kids have graduated with serious lagging skills (dyslexia, executive functioning) that were never addressed.

The staff is also out of touch with the emotions of today's kids and uses nearly draconian punative methods for behavioral issues (time out chairs, taking away recess, holding an entire class responsible for the actions of one child on the hopes of shaming the child into better behavior, 1-2-3 Magic). The principal has been there a while and perhaps the only way this school will embrace new mindsets and advances in understanding of children's emotional needs is when he is replaced.
