Summary

William R. Peck School is a middle school in Holyoke, Massachusetts, serving 192 students in grades 4-8. The school is part of the Holyoke school district, which is ranked 351 out of 356 districts in the state and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

William R. Peck School faces significant challenges, with a student population that is predominantly Hispanic (78.65%) and from low-income backgrounds. The school consistently ranks among the lowest-performing middle schools in Massachusetts, scoring significantly below state and district averages on MCAS assessments across all grade levels and subject areas. The school struggles to support the academic achievement of various student subgroups, ranking in the bottom 10-20% of Massachusetts middle schools for Hispanic, English Language Learner, Special Education, and Low Socioeconomic Status students. Despite spending significantly more per student ($22,886 in 2020-2021) compared to the state average, this additional funding has not translated into improved academic outcomes.

Nearby schools, such as Holyoke STEM Academy and Holyoke Middle School, also struggle academically but generally perform better than William R. Peck School on MCAS assessments and have higher statewide rankings. This indicates that the challenges faced by William R. Peck School are not unique to the school but are reflective of broader systemic issues within the Holyoke school district. The school's persistent low performance and lack of progress over time highlight the need for a comprehensive, data-driven approach to address the underlying issues and improve educational outcomes for its students.

Open Quote This school is not safe. Students run around the halls all day. Teachers have been assaulted. Fights and bullying are rampant. The administration sweeps these problems under the rug to give an illusion of improvement. The P3 program utilized by the school is of poor quality. Students wind up spending their days on chromebooks pretending to work, then the school manipulates the data .Peck school, and the Holyoke district, as nothing but a testing ground for poorly conceived reform practices so that it may satisfy political pressures from the state. Do not send your children here! Close Quote
