Summary

Brennemann Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-8 in Chicago, Illinois, with 478 students enrolled. The school is part of the Chicago Public Schools District 299, which is ranked 698 out of 811 districts in Illinois and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Brennemann Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom quarter of Illinois elementary schools, with proficiency rates in both English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics significantly below the district and state averages across all grade levels. For example, in 2024-2025, only 27.3% of Brennemann students were proficient in ELA compared to 42.8% for the district and 53.1% for the state. The school also has very high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 25.4% to 43.8% over the past few years, which are much higher than the district and state averages. Additionally, Brennemann has a very high percentage of low-income students, with 85-90% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in recent years.

Nearby schools, such as Courtenay Elementary Language Arts Center, McCutcheon Elementary School, and Inter-American Elementary Magnet School, generally outperform Brennemann Elementary across academic metrics, with higher proficiency rates and better rankings. However, these nearby schools also serve higher-income student populations, with lower percentages of free/reduced lunch recipients compared to Brennemann. The school's declining performance over the past 10 years, with its statewide ranking dropping from the top half of Illinois schools to the bottom 15%, suggests the need for targeted interventions and support to improve educational outcomes, especially for its Hispanic, English Language Learner, and special education student populations.

Open Quote This is my child's first year going to Brennemann and it has been the worst!! from teachers to the main office nothing but difficult unresolved situations. First my child was enrolled two weeks before school and the reason it was so late was because I had to just show up because nobody returned my phone calls, then when I tried to sign him up for the bus service I specifically said I wanted him to be taken back to his daycare because he was only doing a half day. On the first day of school I called to verify that the bus service was approved and that they had the correct address they didn't ( big surprise). When I arrived back to the school to fill out paper work for change of address they apologize because the guy who helped me was new ( who leaves a new person at the desk by themselves with delicate information). Now it will take 7- 10 business days to get an approval for the bus route. On the seventh day I called the department of transportation to see if it was approved because by now I have been making arrangements to pick my son up at 11:30 and take him to his daycare and rush back to work to find out they haven't even gotten the request yet, of course by this time now I call the school to speak to the case manager and assistant principle and they both were in meetings which is fine until I did not receive a call back. I called the department of transportation again the next day to see if they made a mistake and the lady then said his request was denied because it has to be in a one mile radius of the school ( which I think is dumb ) so I called the school again and they were in meetings again so I told the front desk lady that if she does not give me a call back I will pull my son from the school and look what a surprise she called me back within an hour I guess she finally got out of her three day meeting. After all that I sent my sister to pick my son up from school and of course I called when she was on the way, but the worst thing was they let her take him without showing an I'D and when I asked about it the lady in the office said well you called and said your sister was on her way and I said what does a "sister" look like. Terrible!! Now to the teacher, on the first day of school my son's father and I dropped my son off at school and everyone expressed how excoted they were that two parents were doing a drop off which is really exciting but, then the next day the father was not present and my son was crying because he did not want to leave me and the teacher says to me " he does not act like this with dad, maybe dad should drop him off and you should do pick up" like who says that to a parent.
