Harlem High School's performance lags behind its peers in the Columbia County district. The school's four-year graduation rate has fluctuated, ranging from 84.4% to 93.4%, which is slightly below the 85.4% rate reported for the other high schools in the district. Harlem High School's test scores on the Milestones Assessments are also generally lower than the district and state averages across various subjects and grade levels. For example, in 2024-2025, the school's proficiency rates were 37.7% in American Literature and Composition, 23.7% in Algebra I, 47.3% in Biology, and 30.8% in United States History, compared to the district averages of 49.6%, 51.3%, 56.3%, and 46%, respectively.

While Harlem High School's performance is significantly better than the high schools in the neighboring Richmond County School District, which is ranked 177th out of 206 districts in Georgia, the school's statewide ranking and SchoolDigger star rating have been declining over the past several years, from a ranking of 92 out of 426 Georgia high schools and a 4-star rating in 2015-2016 to a ranking of 204 out of 452 high schools and a 3-star rating in 2024-2025. This suggests that Harlem High School may be facing challenges in maintaining its academic performance compared to other high schools in the state.

Open Quote I am both a parent and alumni of HHS. I think the school has become a true community school with the recent downsizing. I think that academics are stressed and it is up to the student to reach up and grasp what is put before them. The school has taken some unfair knocks in the past because the county school system is rated so highly in the state of Georgia, and several of the high schools have a much higher than average socio-economic student base than Harlem. Considering this, when I look at the rating on this site of #87 out of 399 in the state, that puts HHS in the top 22%. As Columbia County's oldest school at 141 years, there are many graduates that have become very successful in their respective vocations. I am proud to be an alum and to live in the city of Harlem. If parents are looking for a true community elementary, middle, and high school in a small town setting, we have the answer.
