It has very high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 30.9% to 50.4% in recent years, which is much higher than the Polk district and state averages. The school's test scores are also consistently well below the Polk district and Florida state averages across all subjects and grade levels. The two magnet schools in the area, Marshall Middle Magnet School and Lawton Chiles Middle Academy, also have significantly better performance than Sleepy Hill Middle School across most metrics, despite serving similar student populations in terms of free/reduced lunch rates.

Open Quote There is a large population of troubled, problem students at this school. Children whom are removed out of other middle schools within the county are placed at this school and labeled with a behavir disorder in order to get ESE learning. Many fights break out on a daily basis. The grades are poor. Parents are forced to buy the school logo shirt from the school office and were banned from buying the county designated uniforms which is a violation of many rights. Close Quote
