Summary

Horace O'Bryant School is a public elementary and middle school serving 994 students in grades PK-8 in Key West, Florida. The school is part of the Monroe School District, which is ranked 16th out of 67 districts in the state and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite the district's strong performance, Horace O'Bryant School has significantly lower proficiency rates compared to the Monroe district and Florida state averages across most grade levels and subjects. For example, in 2024-2025, the school's 3rd grade English Language Arts proficiency rate is 36% compared to 58% for Monroe and 57% for Florida. Similarly, the school's 8th grade Math proficiency rate is only 24% compared to 45% for Monroe and 57% for Florida. The school also has very high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 21.1% to 31.4% in recent years, much higher than the state average.

Interestingly, the nearby Sugarloaf School and Sigsbee Charter School in the Monroe district generally outperform Horace O'Bryant School on test scores and other metrics. Despite the higher spending per student at Horace O'Bryant School, the academic outcomes do not seem to be commensurate with the level of resources, raising questions about the effectiveness of how these resources are being utilized to support student learning.
