Summary

North End Middle School is a public middle school in Waterbury, Connecticut, serving 734 students in grades 6-8. The school faces significant challenges, with consistently low academic performance, high rates of chronic absenteeism, and a student population that is predominantly from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Academically, North End Middle School ranks in the bottom quarter of Connecticut middle schools, with proficiency rates on standardized tests that are well below the state averages. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, only 20.9% of 6th graders, 19.8% of 7th graders, and 22.7% of 8th graders were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to the state averages of 50%, 50.4%, and 50.7%, respectively. The school's performance in Mathematics and Science was even lower, with proficiency rates ranging from 8% to 17.5%.

While North End Middle School's funding and resources appear to be on par with or even higher than some nearby schools, the school's performance lags far behind its peers, both within the Waterbury School District and in the broader region. For instance, John F. Kennedy Middle School in Southington and Memorial Middle School in Middlebury demonstrate significantly higher academic performance, with proficiency rates often exceeding 50% in both English Language Arts and Mathematics. Addressing the root causes of North End Middle School's challenges, such as improving attendance and targeting interventions for the school's most vulnerable student populations, will be crucial for driving meaningful improvements.

Open Quote Where do I begin? The stairwell from the first floor is still dirty and smelled like urine on the first day of school. Classes are overloaded. The school has a dress code but what's the point when they need to focus on bigger issues happening, which the teachers don't seem to be notice or don't address. They seem to major on minors which make the environment unenjoyable. I don't recommend this school. Close Quote

Open Quote There is very much discrimination of teacher american with hispanic students, very much bullying and the administration is useless, when the students are sad or traumatized by situations lived in other countries, they are simply punished, they do not help the students to progress Close Quote
