Summary

Toquam Magnet School is an elementary school in Stamford, Connecticut, serving 549 students from kindergarten to 5th grade. It is part of the Stamford School District, which is ranked 125 out of 156 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite being a magnet school, Toquam consistently underperforms compared to the district and the state of Connecticut in standardized test scores across all grade levels and subjects. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, only 10.5% of 3rd graders were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 28.8% for the district and 46.9% for the state. The school also struggles with high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 17.7% to 22.5% over the past few years, which is significantly higher than the state average. Toquam's statewide ranking has declined over the years, from 350 out of 519 Connecticut elementary schools in 2016-2017 to 432 out of 493 in 2024-2025, with a consistent 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Interestingly, Toquam Magnet School's academic performance lags significantly behind nearby schools, such as Davenport Ridge School, Rogers International School, and Strawberry Hill (an extension of Rogers International), which all outperform Toquam on standardized tests and have higher school rankings. Despite spending more per student ($17,891 in 2018-2019) compared to the nearby schools, Toquam's academic outcomes do not reflect this additional funding.

Open Quote The entire faculty and staff care deeply about the kids. The curriculum is challenging and creative. The parents, faculty, and staff foster a strong sense of community within the school and within the community at large. Teachers welcome parent volunteers who can enhance the curriculum with their own expertise. Active and involved PTO with enough events to cater to everyone's taste. Overall CMT scores belie the true excellence of Toquam. My kids have gotten a great education there. Close Quote
