Summary

New Britain High School is a public high school serving 2,398 students in grades 9-12 in New Britain, Connecticut, which is part of the New Britain School District. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom quarter of Connecticut high schools over the past several years, with a ranking between 103 and 171 out of 139-200 schools.

Academically, New Britain High School underperforms compared to the state and nearby schools like Cromwell High School, Wethersfield High School, and Conard High School. In the 2024-2025 school year, only 30.9% of 11th-grade students were proficient or better in SAT/English Language Arts, compared to the state average of 58%, and only 8.2% were proficient or better in SAT/Math, compared to the state average of 31.1%. The school also has significantly lower graduation rates, ranging from 67.7% to 88.9% in recent years, compared to the state average and nearby schools, which all have graduation rates around 88.4%. Additionally, New Britain High School has very high rates of chronic absenteeism, ranging from 17.7% to 40.2%, much higher than the state average and nearby schools.

One potential factor contributing to the school's challenges is the high percentage of students (69.6% to 70.91%) who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population. This is significantly higher than the nearby schools, which range from 23.35% to 41.72% free/reduced lunch recipients. Despite these persistent challenges, the school has not shown significant improvement over time, suggesting the need for a comprehensive, data-driven approach to address the root causes of its underperformance and implement effective interventions to support student success.

Open Quote I actually had wonderful, very involved teachers during my 2.5-ish years there and, really, my rating would be 5/5 EASILY. Unfortunately, I feel (don't know for certain, since I haven't done as much research as I should before I actually say anything) like the freedom they have over their curriculums was limited & the school's funding- between 2006 and 2008- even more so. The school is stuffed with too many students, regardless of how many actually can or feel motivated enough to attend at any given time, & that's not fair to the students or the staff.
It's really not the school's fault, though, it's the system's- on a city/state-wide scale and in general- and I want to stress how little my rating has to do with how much the staff cares (especially about students who care & that's a whole other, larger issue). Close Quote

Open Quote I've attended this school for a few months in '94. It was way over-crowded. Classrooms overcrowded also, individual attention from teachers - non existent. I did not enjoy attending this school at all. Close Quote
