Summary

Black Rock School is an elementary school serving grades PK-8 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, with 439 students. The school is part of the Bridgeport School District, which is ranked 152 out of 156 districts in the state and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Black Rock School has consistently underperformed the district and state on standardized test scores, with only 25% of 3rd graders proficient or better in ELA in 2024-2025, compared to 16.5% in the district and 46.9% statewide. The school also has high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 15.3% to 29.1% in recent years, and a very high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, from 54.27% to 80.18%. However, the school's student-teacher ratio is relatively low, ranging from 13.1 to 13.6 in recent years.

While Sherman School, McKinley School, and Holland Hill School in the nearby Fairfield School District significantly outperform Black Rock School, the nearby James J. Curiale School, Classical Studies Academy, and Cesar Batalla School in the Bridgeport School District also struggle with low performance and high rates of economic disadvantage, similar to Black Rock School. This suggests that the Bridgeport School District may be underfunded compared to more affluent districts, which could contribute to the challenges faced by schools like Black Rock.

Open Quote Dedicated staff. Safe environment. High standards. Diverse. Can't find anything like it Fairfield County. Don't let the test scores fool you, you have to look at the small classroom size and realize that ESL and special needs children bring test scores down on average. Close Quote
