Summary

Highville Charter School is an alternative public charter school located in New Haven, Connecticut, serving grades PK-12 with a total enrollment of 504 students. The school is part of the Highville Charter School District.

Highville Charter School is struggling academically, with significantly lower proficiency rates in English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, and Science compared to the state and nearby charter schools like Capital Preparatory Harbor School, Achievement First Bridgeport Academy, Amistad Academy, and Elm City College Preparatory School. For example, in 2024-2025, only 11.3% of 3rd graders at Highville Charter School were proficient or better in ELA, compared to the state average of 46.9%. The school's performance in Science is also low, with only 11.8% of 8th graders proficient or better in the NGSS Science assessment in 2020-2021, compared to the state average of 47.9%.

Highville Charter School's high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 17.7% to 28.1% over the past few years, significantly higher than the state average of around 15%, and its high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 71.06% to 75.05%, suggest that the school serves a high-need student population, which may contribute to the lower academic performance. Additionally, the school's lower spending per student and higher student-teacher ratio compared to the state average may also be impacting the educational outcomes. Highville Charter School could benefit from implementing targeted interventions and support programs to address the academic and attendance issues, as well as exploring ways to increase funding and resources to support student learning.

Open Quote I have a PreK3 student enrolled at this educational facility and while his teacher was exceptional, I found the administration as a whole to be a complete and utter disappointment. These individuals lack respect and empathy for the community of parents and children that they serve. It has been my experience that these individuals push and prod parents and students alike and then run and hide behind their fancy titles in an effort to present as educational professionals, when in fact they are not. Open Quote My child has been enrolled in Highville Charter School since 2007. The education and experiences my son has received are far above the other schools in my neighborhood (Hamden). The family atmosphere is also a great benefit of being enrolled in HCS. I recommend Highville to all of my friends and family members. Close Quote
