Summary

Cesar Chavez High is a public high school serving approximately 2,021 students in grades 9-12 within the Stockton Unified School District, operating in a high-need community where about 75% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

The school presents a mixed picture: it excels at graduating students, with a 93.3% graduation rate that outpaces both the district and state, but it faces significant academic challenges. Proficiency rates in core subjects like math (10.53%) and science (13.79%) are very low and have contributed to a concerning drop in its statewide ranking. This creates a paradox where students are earning diplomas but may not be mastering fundamental skills, a pattern also seen at other comprehensive high schools like Franklin High and Stagg Senior High. In stark contrast, specialized schools within the same district, such as Stockton Early College Academy and Pacific Law Academy, achieve dramatically higher academic results.

Key areas for improvement include addressing high chronic absenteeism (35%), which is linked to poorer outcomes, and tackling a district-wide weakness in mathematics instruction. The school's effectiveness varies widely for different student groups, indicating a need for more targeted support. While its per-student spending is mid-range, the example of higher-performing schools suggests that structural and programmatic innovations, not just resources, are key to turning around the recent academic decline.

Open Quote Inexperienced administrators. Grade fraud. Attendance fraud. Inflated graduation rates through bogus 2-week "intersession classes" and social promotion. Little student accountability. Cover ups of student criminal activity. Norteno and Crips gang activity that gets glossed over by admins. Fights on campus. Some girls groped in hallways. Sex on campus. Many lawbreaking students not held accountable by admins. Many students on probation. (Check for ankle bracelets and probation offices on campus.) Some teachers have been assaulted by students. Little administrative support for teachers. Teachers need to protect themselves using union and police resources. California Dept. of Education investigation and intervention.
Though, there are many cool kids trying to get an education and make a good life. Also, there are many teachers who "try to do the right thing" in spite of administrators who are involved in felony fraud, and who are inept managers. Close Quote
