Summary

Lorin Griset Academy is a public high school serving about 283 students in grades 9-12 within the Santa Ana Unified district, operating in a high-need community where nearly all students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Academic performance at the school is among the lowest in the state, with proficiency rates in core subjects like math and English far below nearby schools; for example, only about 12% of students are proficient in English compared to 97% at the top-performing Middle College High. The school's 67% graduation rate is significantly lower than the district average, and its dropout rate of 33% is alarmingly high. A primary driver of these challenges is a chronic absenteeism rate of 77.5%, meaning most students miss a substantial amount of school, which is more than double the rate at other comprehensive high schools in the area like Santa Ana High.

Interestingly, Lorin Griset Academy spends more per student than most other local high schools, yet this higher funding has not led to better outcomes. The school's struggles are long-standing, while other schools in the same district with similar student demographics, such as Hector G. Godinez, achieve much higher graduation rates, demonstrating that challenges can be overcome with effective programs and strategies.

Open Quote This School was small enough to be taught in. It took you places. Like I got to go see The Jackson 5 and The Osman's! It gave out Awards and scholarships. And opportunities. Small enough for good friends, too! Had a blast!!!! Just wish the teachers were checked up on! Had a few problem with them! And some did not do their jobs. Hey, I Graduated a third grade reader and could not spell for anything! But I have been self taught. It was not my lack of wanting to learn, big time!!!!!

If you wish, I would love to talk. And Thanks for listening! 8-)
