Summary

Rooftop Elementary is a consistently above-average K-8 public school serving 575 students in the competitive San Francisco Unified school district, offering the continuity of a single campus from kindergarten through middle school in an area dominated by K-5 elementary schools.

Academically, the school performs solidly, ranking in the 76th percentile statewide, though its profile is interesting compared to neighbors: its English scores are strong, but its math proficiency is a relative weakness, especially when measured against nearby high-performers like Chinese Immersion School at DeAvila or Clarendon Alternative Elementary. Rooftop operates efficiently with a higher student-teacher ratio than many area schools yet maintains good outcomes, and it has shown remarkable historical stability in its performance ratings. However, families should note the school's rate of chronic absenteeism is higher than the state average and some local peers, and performance varies across different student subgroups.

In the broader context, Rooftop represents a reliable, stable choice in a geographically compact area with an extreme range of school performance, from the exceptional Chinese Immersion School at DeAvila to struggling schools like Sanchez Elementary. Its K-8 structure may benefit students by avoiding a disruptive school transition after 5th grade. For families seeking a proven, consistent program without the competitive admissions of some specialized schools, Rooftop Elementary offers a compelling option with a decade-long track record of success.

Open Quote On this school evaluation site and others, I notice they list the student teacher ratio as 16-1 which sounds great, but I think is misleading. Schools may have additional credentialed teachers who do not have 'regular' classrooms but might do pull-out services of students w/special needs. When they are included in the mix, it makes it look like a lower ratio than in reality.

At Rooftop & perhaps other SFUSD schools, I believe K-3 has 22 students. There is talk by the district to raise this # to 25 students. 4-5th have about 32 students. Close Quote
