Summary

California Middle is a public school serving about 780 students in grades 7 and 8 within the Sacramento City Unified School District, standing out as a relatively stronger performer in its local area.

Academically, the school's test scores in English and Math are close to the state average, which is a notable achievement as it consistently outperforms several nearby middle schools like Fern Bacon Middle, Will C. Wood Middle, and Sam Brannan Middle. However, a significant point of comparison is Miwok Middle, another school in the same district located just a few miles away, which achieves much higher proficiency rates with similar resources, showing what is possible in the community. Parents should note that student performance tends to drop between 7th and 8th grade here, and chronic absenteeism is higher than the state average, though it is lower than at some schools with similar challenges in other districts like Rio Tierra Junior High.

The school has shown strengths in supporting students in special education and English language learner programs. While its statewide ranking has gradually declined from earlier years when it was a 4-star school, it currently maintains a 3-star rating and remains one of the higher-performing middle schools within its own district network, suggesting it has effective practices that other local schools do not.

Open Quote I graduated Cal Middle spring of 2008. It's safe to say, Cal Middle completely turned my life around. I was unhappy and outcast at my Elementary school and it got to the point where I tried to commit suicide. However, I fortunately failed and have never tried since. When I got to Cal, I had decided to reinvent myself, even going so far as to change my name. I would not be trying to be someone I was not, but rather loose the bonds I had constrained myself with. I arrived at Cal my first day scared witless and found immediately friends and a welcoming environment. Cal was so diverse that I found that it was extremely easy to find people with whom I could identify. Additionally, some of the best teachers I have had came from Cal, including Mr. Dell, Mr. and Ms. Holt, and the librarian Ms. Vann. Overall, those years remain two of the best years of my life so far. Close Quote
