Summary

Montera Middle is a public school serving about 695 students in grades 6-8 in the Oakland hills, and it stands out as a consistently improving school within the Oakland Unified district.

The school's academic performance is a key strength, with students scoring well above the district average and meeting or exceeding state averages in English, Math, and Science. This makes it one of the higher-performing traditional middle schools in the area, similar to nearby Claremont Middle. While the school serves a socioeconomically diverse community, it has shown remarkable improvement, climbing from the 36th to the 69th percentile statewide since 2019. However, challenges remain, such as a notable drop in 8th-grade math scores and chronic absenteeism that, while improved since the pandemic, is still higher than at some neighboring schools like Edna Brewer Middle.

When compared to other schools, Montera occupies a unique middle ground: it significantly outperforms most Oakland Unified schools but doesn't reach the exceptional results of highly resourced schools in other districts like Piedmont Middle. Importantly, the school achieves these solid results with moderate per-student spending, suggesting efficient use of resources. Parents should note that while the school serves many student groups effectively, performance varies, and support for English Language Learners has declined sharply in recent years.

Open Quote Horrible! I went there for a semester and could not even stand it. There were so many fights and crime. Every day I went to school there, I was so scared. Horrible education, DO NOT RECOMMEND! Close Quote

Open Quote My twins have attended Montera from sixth through eighth grade (2014-17). We have found Montera to be a very good school — with dedicated teachers, a fabulous administration, a and a wonderful Parent-Teacher Organization. We know many people fear large urban public schools yet we have found it to be a great place to learn and grow. In fact, my daughter has earned an academic scholarship for high school thanks to the preparation she has received at Montera. Close Quote
