Summary

Mt. Washington Elementary is a top-performing K-6 public school serving 430 students in the Los Angeles Unified district, consistently ranking in the top 10% of all California elementary schools.

The school's academic results are exceptional, with over 70% of students proficient in English and Math, far exceeding the performance of nearby schools like Aldama Elementary and Aragon Avenue Elementary. It also maintains remarkably low chronic absenteeism at 10.6%, less than half the district average and significantly better than neighbors such as Toland Way Elementary. This consistent high achievement is notable even when compared to specialized magnet schools in the area, like the Glassell Park Elementary School Sci Technical Engr Arts and Math Magnet.

An interesting finding is that Mt. Washington achieves these outstanding results while spending less per student than most surrounding schools and with a slightly higher student-teacher ratio, suggesting highly efficient and effective practices. The school has shown strong success in supporting specific student subgroups and has successfully reduced post-pandemic absenteeism faster than other local schools. While its closest academic competitor is the Richard Riordan Primary Center, Mt. Washington's decade-long record of stability and high rankings makes it a benchmark for excellence in the region.

Open Quote The school is great if you are a white family who doesn't ever want to acknowledge race or that racism exists or that bias exists in every person and in the classroom. And if you want to pretend that every time the "n" word is used by a kid it's a completely isolated incident. The PTA pretty much called all the shots and were bullies to parents who had grievances because their kids were being treated differently on the schoolyard or in the classroom. Close Quote
