Summary

Leland Street Elementary is a K-5 public school serving 418 students in San Pedro as part of the Los Angeles Unified School District, operating in a community with significant economic need where over 80% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Academically, the school's overall state ranking places it in the lower-middle tier, but a closer look reveals important strengths: it performs notably better for its Hispanic and economically disadvantaged students than its overall score suggests, ranking at the 55th and 53rd percentiles for these groups respectively. This indicates the school is relatively more effective in serving these populations compared to many other schools across California. However, the school faces a major challenge with chronic absenteeism, at 30.3%, which is the second-highest rate among nearby schools and well above state averages, impacting consistent learning. Performance also improves significantly in the upper grades, with 5th-grade English proficiency reaching 50%, suggesting effective support for students as they progress.

When compared to neighboring schools, Leland Street occupies a middle ground. It performs better than some schools with similar or higher poverty levels, like Barton Hill Elementary, but lags behind others such as Bandini Street Elementary and nearby magnet schools like Crestwood Street STEAM Magnet. A particular area for growth is science, where proficiency is low at 22.9%, a pattern seen in several lower-performing schools in the area. The school's per-student spending is mid-range compared to its neighbors, yet academic outcomes generally trail those with similar investment, pointing to potential opportunities to enhance how resources are used to boost student achievement.

Open Quote Poor leadership by the school's principal. Office staff is lazy and unhelpful. School rules that fall under the Zero Tolerance policy are not enforced. The GATE program (if your child is considered "gifted") is virtually non-existent and there is no support for these students or parents. The school also consistently ranks low on the school report card we are mailed every year. Close Quote
