Summary

Muir Elementary is a K-6 public school serving 469 students in the Fresno Unified School District, a school that has shown notable improvement over the past decade but continues to face significant academic challenges common in its area.

Academically, Muir's overall test scores are below state averages, with science proficiency being a particular area of concern; however, the school shows relative strength in serving its specific student population compared to some nearby schools with similar demographics, such as Heaton Elementary. A key challenge is chronic student absenteeism, which, while improved from pandemic highs, remains much higher than the state average. Performance also varies dramatically between grade levels, more so than at comparable schools, with some grades performing adequately while others, like 5th grade, show very low proficiency.

When compared to other local schools, an interesting example is Akira Yokomi Elementary, which achieves significantly higher academic results with similar student demographics and lower per-student spending, suggesting factors beyond resources are important. Muir's ongoing progress and its effectiveness with key student subgroups indicate there are foundations to build upon as the school works to address its inconsistencies and learn from higher-performing peers in the district.

Open Quote Observers who obsereve subs here are racist. I was subing here and an observer made up lies against my teaching skills. As an asian male sub, she was racist and rude to me. Its the observers that make the student fail. I will no longer sub here because of how they treat their subs. Close Quote
