Summary

Tom Matsumoto Elementary is a top-tier K-6 public school serving 727 students in San Jose's Evergreen Elementary district, consistently ranking among the very best elementary schools in California for over a decade.

The school's excellence is marked by exceptionally strong and balanced test scores in all subjects and a remarkably low chronic absenteeism rate of 4.7%, which is less than half the district average. It stands out for its effective support of all students, with historically outstanding performance for English Language Learners and strong results for students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. While nearby schools like Silver Oak Elementary and Evergreen Elementary currently have similar high rankings, Matsumoto's track record of sustained elite performance over many years is a key differentiator.

Within the wider Evergreen Elementary district, there is a notable range in school performance; while Matsumoto, Silver Oak, and James Franklin Smith Elementary are in the state's top 4%, others like Holly Oak Elementary rank significantly lower. Matsumoto achieves its exceptional results while spending less per student than several comparable nearby schools, indicating efficient use of resources, though supporting Special Education students to the same high level remains an area for continued focus.

Open Quote The school now looks like a youth detention facility. Shame on the new principal for creating barriers that restrict parent and teacher interaction. She created more traffic congestion; which has the opposite effect of making students safer and relieving foot traffic. These barriers make it harder for parents to retrieve their children and restricts access to classrooms if parents need to communicate with their child's teacher. This principal is rapidly creating a closed-door policy as she has a done as a former principal of Holly Oak Elementary years back. Close Quote
