Summary

Stine Elementary is a K-6 public school serving 615 students in Bakersfield, California, within the Panama-Buena Vista Union district, operating in a high-need environment where over 93% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Academically, the school faces significant challenges, with performance well below state and district averages; only about 29% of students are proficient in English, 13% in math, and 15% in science. Its statewide ranking places it in the bottom 12% of elementary schools. While chronic absenteeism is a concern at 25%, this rate represents a major improvement from recent years and is actually lower than some nearby schools like Wayne Van Horn Elementary. Interestingly, Stine's science scores are a relative strength, outperforming several neighboring schools with similar student demographics, such as Charles H. Castle Elementary and Planz Elementary.

The school's performance has been volatile, showing improvement a few years ago but declining recently. A critical area for improvement is upper-grade math, where proficiency, particularly in 5th grade, is extremely low—a pattern also seen at other local schools. Stine spends a moderate amount per student compared to peers, but schools like Louise Sandrini Elementary, which has similar demographics and spending, achieve better academic results, suggesting that how resources are used is key. The school shows relative effectiveness in supporting English Language Learners, indicating potential strengths to build upon.

Open Quote The Teachers are great ,but they are under staffed. I guess the overcrowding is not only a problem in prisons now it's a problem in our schools. Under staffed school can have serious problems, Yard aids are limited only one for almost 100 students. The one aid could only do so much. If Stine Elementary had more staff the school would be perect. I do feel bad for the teachers that work in an overcrowded environment. There are some parents that care and there are other parents who dont care and let their children do what they want. The Excellent 5 stars go for the great Teachers. Close Quote
