Summary

Orangewood School is an elementary school serving grades PK-8 in the Washington Elementary School District in Phoenix, Arizona. With 772 students, it is one of the larger schools in the district, but has consistently received low ratings from SchoolDigger, ranking in the bottom half of Arizona elementary schools over the past several years.

Orangewood School faces significant challenges in terms of student achievement, with consistently lower test scores compared to district and state averages across all grade levels and subjects. For example, in 2024-2025, only 19% of 5th graders were proficient in science, compared to 25% for the district and 34% statewide. The school also has relatively high dropout rates, ranging from 3.1% to 6.1% over the past few years, which is significantly higher than the typical elementary school. Additionally, Orangewood School serves a high percentage of economically disadvantaged students, with 81.88% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in 2022-2023, and its spending per student has fluctuated over the years, generally lower than nearby Maryland Elementary School and Washington Elementary School.

While Orangewood School's performance varies across different student subgroups, the school's challenges are particularly concerning for English Language Learners and Special Education students, who consistently rank in the bottom half of Arizona elementary schools on standardized tests. These factors, combined with the school's diverse student population and relatively low spending per student, may contribute to its overall underperformance compared to the state and district averages. Addressing these issues will require a comprehensive approach that considers the unique needs of Orangewood School's students and the broader socioeconomic factors that may be impacting its performance.
