Summary

Bonillas Elementary Basic Curriculum Magnet School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-5 in the Tucson Unified District in Tucson, Arizona. The school has 405 students and is located at 4757 E Winsett St, Tucson, AZ 85711-4370.

Bonillas Elementary faces challenges in overall academic performance, with consistently lower standardized test scores in English Language Arts and Mathematics compared to the Tucson Unified District and Arizona state averages. However, the school performs relatively better in Science, with 33% of 5th graders proficient in 2024-2025 compared to 24% for the district. Bonillas has a high percentage of economically disadvantaged students, with 72.85% qualifying for free/reduced lunch in 2022-2023, higher than the district average.

Despite its lower per-student funding and higher student-teacher ratio compared to nearby schools like W. Arthur Sewel and Lineweaver, Bonillas stands out in its performance for Native American and African American student subgroups, ranking highly compared to other Arizona elementary schools. This indicates the school is effectively serving these historically underserved populations, which is a notable strength.

Open Quote The students here at Bonillas are kind, respectful, and responsible. When we asked a 5th grader today, "what would you take away from being a student here at Bonillas", and she said "to believe in herself". That was a really powerful moment and we are so proud of all of the students at Bonillas! Close Quote

Open Quote Bonillas is a good school with excellent foundation grades (K-1). We are in the process of changing and updating our program to better meet the needs of our students, and as with any change, there are growing pains. Regardless of other circumstances, our staff is dedicated to our students and families and making sure our students received the best education possible. Close Quote

Open Quote Bonillas is a great school. The teachers and principal are exceptional and do what is best for students everyday. I moved my students to this school after being another TUSD school and couldn't be happier. My kids are progressing and they feel welcomed here. The principal is very approachable and takes concerns seriously and does what she can to remedy situations and communicate with parents. Close Quote
