Summary

Larkspur Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-6 in the Paradise Valley Unified District in Phoenix, Arizona. With 320 students, the school has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Arizona elementary schools over the past decade, currently holding a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Larkspur Elementary consistently underperforms compared to the district and state averages on standardized tests, with only 31% of 4th graders and 25% of 5th graders proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 60% and 48% respectively for the Paradise Valley Unified District. The school also has significant achievement gaps between different student subgroups, ranking in the bottom 40% of Arizona schools for African American, Hispanic, and White students, while ranking in the top 20% for English Language Learners and Special Education students. Additionally, Larkspur Elementary has seen a significant increase in the percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, from 38.63% in 2021-2022 to 66.57% in 2022-2023, suggesting an increasing concentration of economically disadvantaged students.

Despite its struggles, Larkspur Elementary is located in close proximity to several higher-performing elementary schools, such as Mercury Mine Elementary and Benchmark School, which are also part of the Paradise Valley Unified District. This suggests there may be opportunities for Larkspur to learn from its neighbors and improve its performance, though the school will need to address its unique challenges, such as the increasing concentration of economically disadvantaged students, to provide a consistently high-quality education for all its students.

Open Quote being new to the area, and in Larkspur's district, i went with the flow. i had a conflict right away when we went to tour the school. the front office wouldn't allow a tour. i asked why, and was given every excuse in the book. mainly that the teachers were in the middle of their set-up time. from day one in the classroom, my child was told there were too many students for her to have any individual attention. then, the bullying came up. we have been in numerous times to "straighten it out," threats of suspension are voiced, and yet there is no follow-through. i have taken all i can stand, and hope no one else has to endure such an ordeal!
