Summary

Whitman Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 569 students in grades PK-6 in Mesa, Arizona. As part of the Mesa Unified District, which is ranked 177 out of 289 districts in the state, Whitman Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Arizona elementary schools over the past 10 years, with a 1-2 star rating from SchoolDigger.

Whitman Elementary faces significant challenges in terms of academic achievement, with students consistently underperforming the district and state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2024-2025, only 21-37% of Whitman students were proficient in English Language Arts compared to 34-46% for the district and state, and only 25-37% were proficient in math compared to 38-42% for the district and state. The school also struggles to serve many of its student subgroups effectively, with rankings for female, male, Hispanic, Native American, and special education students all in the bottom half of Arizona elementary schools. The only bright spot is its high ranking for English Language Learners, where it ranked 5 out of 5 stars in 2020-2021.

Whitman Elementary's performance has steadily declined over time, from the 602nd best elementary school in Arizona in 2016-2017 to the 664th best in 2024-2025. This suggests the school is struggling to improve and may need significant intervention. Interestingly, Whitman Elementary performs significantly worse than nearby schools like MacArthur Elementary, which ranks in the top 25% of Arizona elementary schools. Additionally, Whitman Elementary's lower per-student spending compared to the district average could be a contributing factor to its poor performance and may indicate a need for additional funding and resources.

Open Quote The handling of bullying is near non-existent. They say they have 0 tolerance, but when does the 0 tolerance start? After the 100th time it has been reported? They couldn't even spell my child's name right for the whole year, you know how many times my son got accomplishment rewards with his name misspelled? Then on many occasions they would call him my daughter, paperwork had "she" instead of "he". Also, when I had to call him in because he was sick, not only did they not know who I was calling in about I was asked many times who I was. I am not sure how many ways you can say mother. I am not sure how this school has been able to stay functioning. Close Quote
