Summary

Catalina Ventura School is an elementary school serving grades K-8 in the Alhambra Elementary District in Phoenix, Arizona, with 886 students. The school has consistently been ranked in the bottom half of Arizona elementary schools over the past decade, with a 1-2 star rating from SchoolDigger, and its performance on state assessments has been below the district and state averages across grade levels and subject areas.

Catalina Ventura School's proficiency rates on the AASA English Language Arts and Mathematics assessments, as well as the AzSCI Science assessment, have been significantly lower than the Alhambra Elementary District and Arizona state averages across all grade levels. For example, in 2024-2025, only 27% of 3rd graders were proficient in ELA compared to 36% statewide, and only 23% of 5th graders were proficient in Math compared to 37% statewide. The school has also had relatively high dropout rates in recent years, ranging from 5.2% to 9.5%, which are notably higher than the state average. Additionally, the school has a high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, with 74.89% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in 2022-2023.

When comparing Catalina Ventura School to nearby schools within the same district, such as Barcelona Elementary and Cordova Elementary, as well as schools in other districts like Ocotillo School and Academy of Math and Science Glendale, Catalina Ventura School consistently performs worse on state assessments and has lower rankings. However, the school's potential strength in supporting its English Language Learner (ELL) population, as well as the inconsistencies in funding and staffing, suggest that targeted interventions and a more stable resource environment could potentially help the school improve student outcomes.

Open Quote We have had such a great experience at Catalina. The teachers are very dedicated and hard-working. My older kids have been very successful in high school because of what they learned at Catalina. It is a great school! Close Quote

Open Quote PLEASE BEWARE! Unless your child is a fighter.... this school is dangerous! There are constant fights and the bullying is out of control. The principal tries to act like it doesn't exist there and demands that she not be questioned about how she runs the school. When my kids started there I loved the school but since the new administration, it is so downhill. The school is out of control and no one helps the kids when they report things like name calling or physical abuse they are receiving from other kids. I saw another review online that said this school was like a gladiator yard and that pretty much sums it up. This school is sick and will only get worse because no one is responding to the complaints. Please get a waiver for your child to go to school somewhere else.! Close Quote

Open Quote Unfortunately, this school used to be one of the top schools for a student to be at. At this point, the students run the school. Administrators are no where to be found and don't want to deal with discipline. The teachers are constantly having to use classroom management throughout the day and this is taking much needed time away from the teaching of the students. The teachers are over-worked and miserable. Finally, the administrator is under-qualified and should not be in this position. Close Quote
