Summary

J. O. Kelly Middle School is a public middle school serving grades 6-7 in Springdale, Arkansas, part of the Springdale School District. With 641 students, the school consistently underperforms compared to the district and state on standardized tests, ranking in the bottom half of Arkansas middle schools.

J. O. Kelly Middle School has an extremely high percentage of students, 92-95%, receiving free or reduced-price lunch, significantly higher than nearby Hellstern Middle School (43.83%) and Helen Tyson Middle School (82.37%). Despite higher per-student spending than some nearby schools, the school's test scores remain low, with only 19.6% of students proficient or better in English Language Arts in 2024-2025, compared to 31.8% for the district and 34.7% for the state.

Interestingly, the nearby Hellstern Middle School and Woodland Junior High School significantly outperform J. O. Kelly Middle School, suggesting factors beyond just district-level policies may contribute to the school's underperformance. The school's relatively low student-teacher ratio indicates class size may not be a significant factor, and the school's inconsistent ranking trends over time suggest opportunities for targeted interventions and support to improve educational outcomes for its students.

Open Quote I was a student at J.O. Kelly MS back in 1996. I am proud to say I was one of the first students to attend this school. Principal Ford is amazing, she has a passion for this school that runs deep. I look back fondly at my days at JO Kelly. I am a very proud JO Kelly Knight! If I still lived in Arkansas, I would want my children to attend such a wonderful school. Close Quote
