Summary

Central High School is a public high school serving 1,568 students in grades 9-12 in Phenix City, AL, which is part of the Phenix City School District. The school has had a mixed performance on state assessments, with proficiency rates in math, science, and English for 11th graders falling below state averages. However, Central High has shown stronger performance for certain student subgroups, ranking in the top 40 in the state for African American and Hispanic students in recent years.

Central High School has relatively strong graduation rates, with a 4-year graduation rate of 90.0% in 2023-2024, on par with the state average. But the school has struggled with high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 14.8% to 19.8% in recent years, which is higher than the state average. Additionally, a large majority of Central High's students (73.6% in 2023-2024) qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population.

Interestingly, Smiths Station High School, located just 3.4 miles from Central High, has generally outperformed Central High on state assessments and has a lower percentage of students qualifying for free/reduced lunch (49.26% vs. 73.6% at Central High). This proximity and performance differential may present an opportunity for collaboration or resource-sharing between the two schools. Addressing the root causes of Central High's chronic absenteeism and examining how resources are allocated at the school could also help drive improvements in student success.

Open Quote This school brings children from many different backgrounds together to provide them with an excellent education while also preparing them for their careers. The Superintendent really cares about each and every student individually and the Teachers provide a supportive environment where children are encouraged to exceed their own expectations. My children attended Phenix City schools until we moved to Georgia 3 years ago. Georgia teachers and administration are not nearly as supportive or encouraging. And in comparison, Phenix City schools are well ahead of Columbus, GA schools. Close Quote
