Summary

Barrett Elementary School is a public elementary school in Birmingham, Alabama, serving 415 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Birmingham City School District, which is ranked 113 out of 135 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. Unfortunately, Barrett Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom 10% of Alabama elementary schools over the past decade, with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Barrett Elementary's academic performance is significantly below the Birmingham City and Alabama state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, only 11.48% of 3rd graders, 6% of 4th graders, and 7.84% of 5th graders were proficient or better in Mathematics, compared to 26.51% and 45.47% for Birmingham City and Alabama, respectively. The school also has high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 13.6% to 23.3% over the past few years, which is much higher than the state average. Additionally, Barrett Elementary has a very high percentage of students (over 87%) who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high-poverty student population.

Interestingly, the nearby schools, such as Christian School, Martha Gaskins K5, and Inglenook School, generally outperform Barrett Elementary across academic metrics, despite being part of the same Birmingham City School District. This suggests that factors beyond just district-level policies and resources may be contributing to the underperformance of Barrett Elementary. The school's performance has remained consistently low over the past decade, with no significant improvement in its rating or academic achievement.

Open Quote I once felt that Barrett Elementary School had a wonderful staff there to serve the students as well as the public in an educational capacity. I felt that the staff there valued the education of it's students and appreciated the teachers who made up the teaching staff there. However, after a very smart, articulate and dedicated teacher was terminated by a staff member in charge of hiring and termination of other staff because of personal feelings against that teacher, I no longer have respect for principals or any other staff in the Birmingham School System. To ruin an individual's life due to selfish and jealous reasons is something that only God can take control of; and he will do so, and it usually isn't long before He does. Close Quote
