Open Quote Enrolling my kids at Hammond has been one of the best decisions I’ve made. I have two sons at Hammond, one in the tenth grade and the other in kindergarten. I came to Hammond for several reasons while at public school, although my oldest son was in advanced classes, at one of the better schools in the district, he wasn’t challenged. Even though he didn’t have regular study habits, he excelled in his courses, which concerned me. The subject matter just didn’t challenge him enough. I knew he couldn’t continue on this path as he entered into college…..although he probably differed. The second reason I looked at Hammond was because in a class of 23, he was often neglected and was only a number.
We’re in our third year at Hammond, and both my kids truly love the school. Hammond has a diverse environment which truly enriches each student's experience. The teachers genuinely love each child and care about their emotional, social, physical and academic growth. They are responsive to student/parent concerns. The class sizes are small enough (8:1) so that each child gets necessary attention. The teachers seem to enjoy coming up with creative ways to help the kids learn. My son’s teachers are awesome in nurturing the excitement in him to learn. My children have accelerated their emotional, physical and academic growth while at Hammond. While in Pre-K, my son would come home and inform me of facts that I’d have to go look up myself. The school teaches the students to be independent and responsible. They not only help the students to become independent, but they help the parents to ALLOW the kids to become independent (cut the cord) lol.
The curriculum is challenging in that it prepares them to be miles ahead of other students when entering college. I’ve heard from several graduates that their college experience has been much easier because of what they’ve learned at Hammond. There is emphasis on writing, public speaking, math, science and the arts. From Hammonds 2016 graduating class, seventy-two students were awarded a total of $6.6 million in scholarships. This speaks volumes!
Learning extends to beyond the classroom at Hammond. Other learning tools included are Hammond’s Outdoor Education Program with Naturalist-in-Residence, Mr. Mankey, who often takes the kids through the schools 107 acre property to explore nature up close, instead of just reading about it in the books. There are a number of sports students can involve themselves with: golf, lacrosse, equestrian, sporting clays, swimming, track, tennis, wrestling, although I am partial to my football, because my oldest plays. Currently, Hammond holds 128 state championships. Even while enjoying the thrill of the game, students are taught respect for fellow players, for their opponents, and to represent their school with dignity while playing. There have been incidents where I witnessed unsportsmanlike behavior from the opposing team. Instead of retaliating, Hammond continued to play with dignity. And that makes me proud.
Hammond is culturally sensitive as well. Every year the school chooses a country in which the entire school learns of, for the year. Of course learning about the country of choice happens in the classroom, but exercises exhibiting foods, and/or customs, are displayed. In addition to skits, individuals from the country of choice come in and share their knowledge with the students.

I was satisfied with the fact that my children were getting to know their teachers and friends on a more intimate level, but this school and the actual families are concerned about each other. At the end of last year, we lost our home in South Carolina’s 1,000 year flood. We literally left with the clothes on our back. Never in my life have I experienced such an event, but what was more overwhelming was how this Hammond family surrounded us with love, care, and encouragement. This school was just as concerned with making sure my boys returned to a “normal life” as much as I was. My pastor told me that, as a community, we share each other’s joys and divide each other’s pains. This school certainly carried some of the weight of our pain. Their thoughts, prayers, texts, calls, items, and friendship have acted as a medicine that helped heal my family. The phrase, “we are one” could not have been more true during this time in our lives. I could not even begin to tell you how this Hammond family has blessed us. The school and families opened up their hearts and homes to us. One coach even offered to live with relatives, so that we could occupy his residence. There were countless acts of kindness shown toward us. Offers to occupy my kids while I regrouped while at the same time, keeping my son’s mind off of the tragic event one of my sons teachers knew I lost photos, but didn’t think twice about creating a scrapbook of all the pics she took of him the previous year. That meant the world to me! Small meaningful gestures like that are abundant here, because Close Quote

Open Quote When deciding the best school for your child there is nothing better than choosing an environment that not only excels in its academic curriculum but more importantly a true sense of community. Hammond is so much more than a typical school. It is a family. I am humbled that my son is not only receiving a phenomenal education but the sense of having an extended family to be a part of. The faculty and staff go above and beyond to ensure that every child feels this way. As a full-time working mother, I enjoy watching my son grow up in this community. There is always a friendly face to greet parents and children from the headmaster to the crossing guards. I truly enjoy volunteering in several aspects for the school as I feel honored and privileged to be a part of something great. My son truly loves his school and I could not be happier in choosing such an amazing place for him to receive an education. Close Quote

Open Quote Definitely not a good place. Administration makes up their own rules. Going steadily downhill Middle School Principal is weak and inconsistent. Close Quote

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
