As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote not a good building, the teachers are too young, the school is too poor. I've gone there since 5th grade, so anyone one reading this can trust me because of my firsthand experience. There are some good teachers, and I stress the some, but the rest are barely decent if you ask me. Close Quote

Open Quote My son attends Washington Latin Public Charter School, and I have taught in District of Columbia Public Schools (I now teach in an independent school). I can say wholeheartedly that a bright child CAN get a challenging, supportive and free education in the District. However, it takes a bit of rooting about, proactive parents, and it will be different than the school experience in our greater metro suburbs. (And it will be no thanks to the number-crunching policies of Michelle Rhee that are sadly depleting the life spark from the current public schools in good standing in the District). For a quality, free middle school education in the District I would recommend Washington Latin or Deal (thanks to good internal management). Deal is the larger public school, where the motivated student can succeed. Washington Latin is the smaller, quirky charter school--where the motivated child can also succeed (and begin studying Latin in 5th Grade to boot!). In honesty, Washington Latin is capacity building, and there are some instances (such as the physical plant) that have room for growth. However, the teachers tend to be 'the best and the brightest'--completely passionate about what they teach, and the school administration and leadership are smart, experienced and methodically growing the school in an intelligent way. I attended many excellent private schools growing up on the government's dime (foreign service brat). Our family has options other than Latin. Our son loves it there, it is a determined, diverse, hopeful community staffed by smart professionals who care, and populated by families not ready to 'give up on the District', (and who value the choice option presented to all families by the Charter movement). Check Washington Latin out; you will be welcomed! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
